Script for evaluation task 5

Evaluation task 5

  • A group of teenagers, preparing for their survival in a world ravished by monsters.
  • 2 boys and one girl

We are appealing to a young age group between 16- 30, boys and girls as both are represented as strong characters.
We didn't use any music, instead we used rain sound and only the teenagers walking around. Makes it very naturalistic and builds of the suspense
Our insitution is called Temple Hill Pictures, Producer Sophie King, MAHT productions –Millie, Harvey, Alex and Theresa.
Venatic-hunting for fun, with non diesgtic sound to indicate the commencement of a dark thriller film
Lots of quick cuts to increase the pace of the sequence, sometimes slowed down the pace of the sequence so that suspense of the unkown danger could build before changing into quick shots again
Unlinked the sound with Adobe premier, to make the sound clearer. Therefore we had freer allowance with the formation, length for example how long we wanted the sound for each shot and where to place it
We used Sennheiser directional microphone on order to create foley sounds

Pleasures the target audience can take from our sequence, identitdy, self identification , entertainment
It is a scienfiction thriller and films like attack the block, or Jurassic park have similarites

Codes and conventions – constant build of suspense, hand held camera for shaking scene, gives audience feeling of being disorientated, the aim of the protagonist to restore justice.
Quick cuts, shadows , tension sound,  low key lighting or darkness

Evaluation task 2. How does your media product represent particular social group?

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our opening thriller sequence is about a group of teenagers who are trying to survive in a world ravished by unknown monsters. They are filmed in a shed trying to collect weapons to be able to survive. Our media project tried to represent a counter type of the heroes in society as they are normally portrayed as full grown men who save the day Our heroes are  a mixed group that are showed equal in strength and pace. Most close ups are shot of our actress as she prepares weapons, this shows her importance in the group. The scene is made out of 3 characters, two boys and one girl, each of them are searching for weapons. For the use of props we chose to give the male character the weapon. This Represents him as the protector of the group, suggesting that the male should be armed, whilst the female character simply prepares what appears to be a petrol canister. The male is being represented as both practical and protecting, very much adhering to the stereotypes we would usually associate with the male gender within a social group. We were careful with our choice of costumes in that we wanted our thriller to be realistic. The female has no make up and wears practical masculine clothes, representing both genders as equal. For lighting the first time a male character gets introduced his face is lit up and the audience is able to see him properly however when the female is introduced the lighting focusses on the props rather than on her. Through the lighting the male is being represented as more important than the female character.

In terms of shot duration, we were carful when representing our social group of gender so that we include the same amount of shots of both our female and main male character. This represents our gender as equal, he has just as much importance in this scene as her.
Early on in the sequence the only diegetic dialogue comes from the female character, she gives a command to the other male, telling him to ‘shush’. This use of sound instantly represents the female as more dominate, or more in control, representing our social group of female within gender as more powerful, subverting the typical stereotype of men being in charge.                                                              However as the sequence continues the male character speaks. Giving a command to the entire group. This second use of diegetic dialogue reverts back to the stereotype of men being in charge and represents the male character as dominate over the female within our represented social group. After we hear the roar of the ‘monster’ off screen, this diegetic sound along with the characters reaction shows that both the male and female characters are equally as scared as each other. Subverting both the expectation that the female will stereotypical typically react more scared than the male, and that the male are also scared In the beginning there is a long shot of the group members entering the shed as there can be a table seen and covered things on the side.  Our actors are represented as rough English teenagers, as they are all wearing black hoodies and dark tracksuits.

When representing our age group, we have only included a young group of people. However, we have been careful in how we have represented the age group. In our opening sequence our characters movements are quick, and spaced apart: Suggesting that they are rushed and alone. This adheres to the stereotype of young people needing guidance/help from an older age. We are representing them as independent but careful to show that this seems unnatural. In terms of our shot duration, although we only represent the teenage  group within our represented social group, we still show more shots of the older teenagers than the younger one. This use of shot duration suggests that the older you are the more important you are however as they are all in their teen's this only works to a certain point.

Evaluation task 1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

location for opening sequence

For our opening sequence we want the shed that the teenagers rob to seem to be in the middle of nowhere, to give the feeling of Isolation. The inside of the shed has to be big enlugh for the camera crew, the cameras, actors, Props etc.
The shed is supposed to look run down and abandoned. The group is supposed to break a lock of the door.

new idea after initial was shot down

After being shot down for our initial idea, we came up with another idea, The hunt.
This idea is about a group of teenagers who in the opening sequence can be seen how they are Stealing weapons from a shed.
The audience doesn't really know what this group is about to hunt but will find out in the film.
We changed this idea slightly to a group of teenagers who are trying to survive in a world that is ravished by Monsters.
Matt and Luke liked the idea, so my group and me started developing it further.

Test shoot and pitching to Matt and Luke

We did a test shoot using the with our phones Edited it with iMovie. For our idea we wanted a church-like setting so we used the Hurtwood house common room without furniture and tried to make it look like a church.. When the priest gave the mass at the very beginning we wanted to film it from different angles, particularly low angles to give the audience the idea that he over-powering and intimidating.  When we began editing, we realised that we need a  wider range of shots so we knew that we could improve it easily by adding shots. The dark lighting in the common room, also helped us to set the mood for the piece as the setting created suspense, which is something that goes against the stereotypical expectation of churches or any religious setting.
To show the nun  in the confession booth, we used the see-through glass with small outlines on it to symbolise this was the grate between the priest and who ever was confessing their sins. The shots we used included close ups, mid-shots, extreme close ups and mid-long shots for when we filmed the nun praying. For most shots, the dark lighting fitted in well with the scene however, when we did an extreme close up of the nun opening her eyes, it was hard to see as there was a shadow over her face.

We wanted to have the priest poure red wine and spill it on a white table to represent blood on an innoncent Background  however as this was the test shoot  we had to improvise with a bottle of coke and a small wooden table. This made the sequence look unprofessional however it still gave us a clear picture of what the pouring would be like in the final clip.
After filming the sequence, we edited it and added diegetic and non-diegetic sound like a Choir of monks and heavy pleonastic sound of breathing. This helped to build tension and suspense. Our test shoot worked quite well but if we had more time to prepare we could have brought in someprops and costumes for our cast to wear.

When we pitched our idea to Matt and Luke, they were not very happy. They didn't like the idea and said that we should think about that we have to film this piece all day and that religion was always a difficult idea to put into reality.

Pitching my own idea to the class

thats not me

rains heavily outside, family waiting in living room mother is cooking
switches to scene where man with dissociative identity disorder pulls something across the ground into a empty dog hut.
switches back to the living room and man comes in (father) hugs children, kisses wife.per                 fect scenario. (the audience only knows the jacket from the raining scene outside). close up shot of the old rusty dog hut out of the living room through the windows in their garden.
kid goes up to her dad and asks for pet. wife and men look at each other and smile.
Man brings his children to bed and freaky music begins to play and there is a torch going trough aisles of the house through the door outside.

End of opening sequence.

overall storyline is that this man has 2 personalties he doesn’t know when he’s doing what, and he kills a man in an mundane argument and drags him home into the old rusty dog hut.
his personalities switch the whole time, he is a nice family father has a good job and is quite popular, when his personalities change he drifts away from this life and sometimes even leaves for more than a day without telling anyone, his wife suspects an affair. When they get their children a puppy and the wife wants to rework the hut. When she goes outside in the garden she sees a dead body in the hut and is absolutely shocked.
The man(husband) calls the police tells them that they have found a dead body. The police begins to investigate and the man wants to protect his family and hires security guards.
a week later they get killed and again the man doesn’t remember killing them and fears for his family.

The storyline continues until they install cameras and he sees himself committing murder and writes a letter to his wife to say he’s sorry but he can’t bring his family in such danger and that he loves her.

First pitch to Mike

When we pitched our idea to another Media teacher, Mike, we had changed a few things about our idea but were still willing to hold on to the religious aspects in it and especially using a noun, a priest and a confession booth.
After we had finished pitching it to him he asked us that if we would take one idea out of our pitch, it could still stand.
When thinking about it we realised that when taking the religious aspect out of it, there was not much left.
In addition he said that there was a lot going on in the scene, and that our project should be something that when we look back on it in 10 years we are still proud of and remember a fun time filming it.
An opening scene about a priest that regularly rapes a noun is not something that we would find easy to film and would clearly be not much fun.
Even though it was quite upsetting to have our idea get shut down the way it did, we found his advice really helpful and are in the proccess of changing it.
